Bodegas Cerrón / La Mancha
The vineyards are located on the northeastern tip of the DOP Jumilla, with slight influences from the La Mancha region. The vines grow at 850-980 m above sea level on sandstone with fossils, limestone and clayey conglomerates. The climate is temperate with extreme temperatures in summer and winter. What is special is the old root-proof vines from the Monastrell, which were planted before the phylloxera plague and which give the cuvées "Remordimiento" tinto and "El sentido de la vida" a unique style. "Old vines are our signature, our heritage, and we will work to preserve them, so that future generations can see the potential of this country," says the winery.
The young generation of Cerrón are the brothers Juan and Carlos, who of course work organically (certified since 1995) and also biodynamically. In addition to the Monastrell grape variety, Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot, a little Cabernet Sauvignon and the white grape variety Airén and Chardonnay are also grown. Why Chardonnay? The brothers' parents loved Burgundy and especially the Chablis region. So they decided to create a vineyard with vine plants from the Chablis. The vineyard is characterized by solid limestone, so that the vines have to be relatively deep to get water. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented with their own yeast.
